Since beginning of 2004 Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME) are able to use their patent-portfolio as an underlying for credits. In comparison to classic financing based on material assets as machines and real estates in most cases similar conditions can be offered. One of the leaders for this new way of financing is IP Bewertungs AG (IPB) based in Hamburg, Germany.
Since 2001 IPB consequently built up its position as leading specialist in terms of patent- and innovation-valuator. The company was founded as a spin off of Knowledge One Fonds AG (K1F) which identified knowledge as the most valuable “production-tool”. In cooperation with a constantly growing network of specialists IPB developed a valuation-method for patents. Its correctness for mathematics and content was certified by KPMG in February 2004. This certificate allows banks to use intellectual properties as a fully underlying for loans.
At the moment the IPB-method is used at one of the biggest German banks. It’s the base for patent-based financing especially for SME. Apart of the classic loans the IPB-Methods opens an additional financing source by so called "Sale-and-lease-back" constructions which enlarges the companies equity base. This has a positive impact on any kind of rating (bank-internal or external).
With the IPB-method large patent-portfolios can be valuated in short time, for moderate prices, continuously and independent. Many companies use this method for R&D – Controlling. Especially the yearly decisions for giving up a patent or carrying on can by automated.
Parallel optional transaction partners for non-core patents can be identified or competitors can be monitored.
