Yesterday IP Auctions GmbH held the first live auction for patents, licences and brand rights at the Kempinski Airport Hotel in Munich. 130 interested parties watched intently as 83 lots were auctioned. Disney Faces Trademark Battle Over Winnie the Pooh Name Rights
Walt Disney Co. is facing a new legal front in its battle over the right to the Winnie the Pooh characters. Stephen Slesinger Inc., which owns the merchandising rights to the characters and traces its stake to the 1930 agreement with Pooh creator A.A. Milne, is seeking to cancel the U.S. trademarks of 25 Pooh-related names obtained by Disney since 1996. According to Slesinger Disney was not the owner of the registered marks at the time that these filings were made. The petition before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is the latest in a 16-year legal battle over the rights to Winnie the Pooh.

EarthLink Faces USD 20 Million Patent-Infringement Claim
EarthLink Inc., the U.S.'s fourth-biggest Internet-service provider, should be ordered to pay at least USD 20 million in damages for infringing three patents. Inline Connection Corp. sued EarthLink in 2002 over patents awarded since 1998 on digital-subscriber lines that speed up Internet downloads for telephone customers. According a lawyer for Inline EarthLink has used this patents for years and refuses to pay him a nickel. He said the damage request was equal to 25 percent of EarthLink's savings from use of the patented technology.

China's Intellectual Property Rights Lawsuits Rise
China's courts have heard more lawsuits involving intellectual property right violations since the nation entered the World Trade Organization in 2001. There were 54,321 civil cases involving intellectual porperty rights between 2002 and 2006, more than double the number in the preceding five years. China's courts heard 14,219 such cases last year.
