Innovation
The technology presented consists of an innovative platform technology for the production of active ingredients e. g. for drugs and technical enzymes, with which intact bacteria cells are used (whole cell catalyst). For this purpose, proteins are present as "tools" on the cell surface, in contrast to conventional whole cell catalysts, where they enable continuous synthesis of highly complex molecular structures with substrates from the surrounding medium. What is meant by the concept of the whole cell catalyst is a biotechnological system that can be used with the aid of E.coli cells to produce a wide variety of proteins and active pharmaceutical building blocks. This is in particular enabled by the AIDA-Iautotransporter system.

Bioactive compounds such as medicines or technical enzymes for example are predominantly manufactured today using genetically modified bacteria. Depending on the type, only certain active ingredients can be produced and these frequently have to be extracted using laborious isolation procedures. The patented innovation outlined offers both an extension here and a completely new system for producing active ingredients. It is sufficient to offer preliminary stages of the matter required in the medium, which are then transformed on the cell surface - with the whole cell catalyst - into the desired compounds. Along with simple isolation of the products, the whole cell catalyst stands out due to the opportunity to carry out quantitative as well as qualitative controls.
